Videos featured on this page include creating a damn around your home, build the interior of your home to handle a flood, create more permeable surfaces, install a sewage back-flow device and a clever solution for impassable muddy roads.
DAM OR BE DAMMED
Some say well,….. I’ll be damned!! …And if you are, then you are one lucky homeowner!
Go to Louisiana, spend $8,300 and you too can have your own personal island without ever moving.
Apparently someone from Lake County got one of these too. Here is the evidence! Apparently it worked for them too.
BUILD TO HANDLE HOME FLOODING
If you need to re-build after a flood learn from this couple how they adapted. Then you too can hose your kitchen floor rather than mop it down!
Also note that they saved their plastic food containers to put under the furniture legs when moisture starts to invade their home.
CHOICES FOR CREATING MORE ABSORPTION OF WATER
This video offers many choices for dealing with impervious surfaces that contribute to flooding. Collectively all of our roofs, lawns, driveways, parking lots and roadway contribute to significant flooding. If we each make better choices to absorb the rain where it falls, the problem will be reduced.
Starting at 2m08 is an explanation of the problem and a variety of solutions to consider.
SEWAGE BACK FLOW DEVICES
If you want to consider installing a sewage back-flow device, you can. Just be aware that it requires you to be more a responsible home owner in maintaining it. It does not exist as a standard option in homes. The main reason it is NOT standard on sewage systems is because the WHOLE shared sewer system needs to breathe to remove gases and keep air flowing thru it!
Typically you need to get approval from the company running the system you are connected to and/or the county before installation. (And only certain homes typically need the device.)
Here is how the device works.
This is the inspection of an installation. Skip to 7m05 for an explanation on maintenance of this device that you will need to do once a year.
This thing does work. Here it is protecting this home from being flooded with sewage.
MUDDY ROADS – DON’T GET STUCK IN YOUR DRIVEWAY!
If the road to your home starts to become impassable, here’s a HOT NEW SURVIVOR TIP!: If you have flat spots on your road that gravel can’t solve, then put down flat sheets of lumber and rail road ties. It is a short term solution, but at least your car won’t get stuck in the mud! (Thanks Beth Rudiger for this tip!)
